Why should you particpate in the virtual german exchange? watch the video below to see all the friends you can make!
For the past three years students from Maynard Jackson High School and Sigmund-Schuckert Gymnasium in Nuremberg, Germany have collaborated in a well-rounded educational and cultural exchange. Here is how it works –
Human Rights Project: Each year a topic is chosen that the students will research to determine whether or not the topic is in violation of the Declaration of Human Rights. There is not always a clear cut answer to the question, but the goal is to provide awareness to the students and those they encounter throughout the project. The students participate in a variation of activities that increases their knowledge of the topic such as campus surveys, an expert panel, and presentations from people with personal experience related to the topic. This year the students will be exploring the topic of Fair Trade & Labor Practices.
Home Exchange: Each one of the German students will be paired with a student from MJHS that they will stay with for the duration of the trip. While the German students are here the host family is responsible for taking them on as a member of their family. There will be several occasions that the students will participate in group activities, but during free time the host family is responsible for introducing them to American culture and showing them different Atlanta attractions. When we return to Germany in the summer our students will stay with families and be treated in the same manner.
Different Options for Participation
*If your family is not in a position to host a student but you would still like your student to participate in the exchange it is mandatory that they take part in the project to show their interest and commitment.
*If your student would like to host but is not interested in going on the return trip that is possible, but they must participate in the project while in Atlanta.
*Students who host have priority on the return trip, then based on the amount of spots available students who participate in the project will be chosen to go on the return trip.
